Boone REMC is now Boone Power. We've rebranded, but we’re still the same local electric cooperative delivering safe, reliable electricity to Greater Boone County.
Cold Weather Tips for Heat Pumps

If you have a heat pump, during very cold weather like we are experiencing in Central Indiana, it’s normal for your auxiliary (AUX) or emergency (EM) heating system to turn on. However, if it runs for extended periods of time, it can take a toll on your system and increase your energy bills. Here are a few tips for those with heat pumps.
- Lower Your Thermostat: Setting the thermostat between 62 and 68 F can sometimes keep the AUX or EM heat from turning on.
- Layer Up: Wear extra layers and throw an extra blanket on your bed so you can keep the thermostat set to a lower temp and still be comfortable.
- Stop the Drafts: Use rolled-up towels at thresholds to stop all drafts from the outdoors.
- Don’t Rely on Space Heaters: Our January 2024 magazine contained helpful space heater tips: https://www.indianaconnection.org/space-heaters-what-you-need-to-know/.
- Check the Thermostat Once Above Freezing: Once the temperature rises above freezing, make sure your thermostat is not stuck on AUX or EM heat to keep your energy bills from skyrocketing.
