Capital Credits

It represent each member’s share of Boone Power’s margins. 

Instead of profits going to shareholders, margins are allocated to members based on their electricity usage. 

These credits are later returned to members as refunds, reinforcing Boone Power’s cooperative, not-for-profit structure.

When you signed up to receive electric service from Boone Power (formerly Boone REMC), you became a member, not just a customer, of an electric utility. While investor-owned utilities return a portion of any profits back to their shareholders, electric co-ops operate on an at-cost basis and as such, allocate and periodically retire capital credits, also called patronage, based on how much electricity each member purchased during a given timeframe.

If you are the lawful heir, beneficiary, or representative of the person or business to whom a capital credit check is addressed and you wish to claim the patronage,you will be asked to provide documentation, including a current photo ID, a death certificate and power of attorney documentation (if applicable), and if for a business, articles of incorporation listing the claimant as an officer of the entity.
